The Combi Tour Laos & Cambodia

The idea for this tour was born during the last wonderful Cambodia tour at the end of 2022. 15 fundriders were so enthusiastic that 7 of them spontaneously said they would like to experience such a social adventure in South-East Asia again at the end of 2023. Everyone would probably like to see the mountains in the north of Laos. But no one wants to miss out on the social part and active development aid in their own projects. Unfortunately, we (Kleine Hilfsaktion e.V.) do not have the infrastructure in Laos that is needed to implement about 45 emergency aid projects. Therefore, we combine the tourist part in the beautiful mountains of northern Laos with the aid projects in Pursat and Banan in Cambodia. This way, the fundriding combination tour fulfills the purpose it is supposed to. On the one hand to acquire many kilometers and thus many donations, on the other hand to give everybody the possibility to bring in his social engagement in his own three emergency aid projects. Don’t worry, we will take you by the hand if necessary.

Ultimately, it is the people who make Cambodia and Laos so special. The openness and warmth with which they meet us, the friendliness and hospitality that we receive – all this seems almost strange to us Central Europeans. Over the years, we have met many people – and quite a few have become real friends. Friends who are committed to supporting the work of Kleine Hilfsaktion e.V..

Laos – nature in its purest form

It already starts with the arrival in Luang Prabang, supposedly the most beautiful city in Southeast Asia. Immediately after arrival, you feel at home and any expected pressure, any hustle and bustle is absent. The Laotians, like the Cambodians, are perfect hosts. Everything runs somehow orderly, every evening any garbage is removed from the streets. Laos is known for its varied and good cuisine, for relaxed people and for breathtaking nature. As in neighboring Cambodia, you are almost never begged. Everyone tries to help and everyone is friendly. The accommodations are handpicked by us and always special. A country we consider ideal to be traveled and experienced at a relatively slow pace.

Cambodia- The field of activity of Kleinen Hilfsaktion e.V.

Arriving in Pursat, 15 brand new scooters are already waiting for us. As we always care about safety and it is very difficult to rent so many good scooters, we decided to buy a fleet of 15 brand new Honda Wave 110.  You will be the first ones on the vehicles!

In Pursat, we will all work on one emergency project each and play a soccer tournament with the 269 students of KSS on the new soccer field. For those who would rather work with the kids on the yoga or dance workshop, you are invited to join us. Kathrin Krabbe, a fundrider of the Tour 2022 wants to come up with something. We, and especially the children, are grateful and looking forward to it. In addition, we want to bring the 15 notebooks for the new computer room, of which everyone should have one in their luggage. Big thanks at this point to the donor, the company All-for-One from Germany.

After two days in Pursat (Central Cambodia) we will drive a dreamlike tour of about 180 km, passing the Cardamon Mountains to Banan in the North of Cambodia.

Each of us will also do an emergency project there and hand over the wheelchair to a person who really needs it. You bring this used wheelchair from home as a fundrider, as your personal free medical baggage, but we will explain that in more detail. The local emergency project is another ideal opportunity

We are looking forward to your application/registration and especially to an interesting and helpful tour!

Your next chance

From 18 November to 02 December 2023!

The Route

Laos

Laos is simply brilliant for all demands we have on a fundriding tour. This is at least true for the mountains in the north of Laos. We already came back enthusiastic from our test tour in September 2018. Together with our local guides, we had worked out a tour that was supposed to show the fundriders all facets of this impressive country.

Since we have “only” six tour days in Laos on this combination tour, we naturally had to adjust the route accordingly and reduce it to about 950 km.

After arriving on Saturday, we set off right away on Sunday morning. Six great interesting tours with six different hostels in the mountains of Laos are waiting for us.

Followed by a service vehicle, which chauffeurs not only our luggage but also the accompanying doctor, the way leads us right out of the city and high into the mountains. The special feature of the medical care on this tour is the spontaneous commitment of the German doctor and first chairman of Kleine Hilfsaktion e.V., Dr. Dirk Boerner. He has already accompanied healthcare projects in Cambodia in the past. In addition, we have the honor that among the participants is again (Dr.) Thomas Kretz, which means double medical care – best!

The tour not only gives us deep insights into the partly untouched nature, but also brings us in direct contact with the different ethnic groups that the widely ramified mountain range on the border to China is home to.

The roads are consistently good and the traffic on most stages, very light. Our route takes us up to an altitude of about 1,600 meters. Each stage is different and every day the participants will be surprised by another natural spectacle or another really impressive scenery.

The track can be mastered even by inexperienced riders. We are equipped with a total of three guides, so we have the luxury of being able to form two or even three groups if the riding levels are too different. Everyone should have fun and enjoy without pressure.

After about 950 km we arrive Friday afternoon in the capital Vientiane.

Saturday is the transfer day.

We fly to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Our well known tour bus will pick us up at the airport and take us to Pursat in central Cambodia.

Cambodia

Once in Pursat, we will cover some kilometers for the emergency projects, most of them probably between the rice fields 😊. After two days we will go to Banan. We do not take the highway No5. We drive about 80 km on a great lightly traveled country road towards Veal Veng at the Kardamon Mountains and from there about 90 km across a beautiful landscape to Banan. There we move again some days on the countryside, we work on our projects. On the last day, it’s 20 Km to Battambang and then on the boat to Siem Reap, a crazy experience.

Day Description

Friday, November 17, 2023: Departure from anywhere to Luang Prabang (LPQ) 🙂 don’t worry we will advise you on the flights 🙂

Saturday, November 18, 2023: Luang Prabang

Arrival in the proverbial “most beautiful city in South-East Asia”. Everyone arrives on their own individual flight. Meeting point is a beautiful hotel near the river. The first thing we will do is hand over the scooters and take care of those who still have their difficulties with them. In the evening we are all together for the first time and we enjoy a dinner together. Of course we discuss the schedule for tomorrow.

1st overnight stay: Luang Prabang

Sunday, November 19, 2023: Luang Prabang – Nong Khiaw (130 km)

It is our first stage. It leads us directly into the mountains. The roads are clean and well passable. We enjoy the beautiful weather, the winding and breathtaking landscape. Of course we take the pressure off the somewhat weaker ones by softening the group structure a bit if necessary and are happy to ride in two or three groups, we do have the luxury of three guides .

After arrival we check into a simple guesthouse, take a boat, go on the Nam Ou River and enjoy the beautiful view of the limestone along the river.

2nd night: Nong Khiaw

Monday, November 20, 2023: Nong Khiaw – Vieng Thong (166 km)

After a hearty breakfast, we get back on the scooters and continue on the quiet 1C towards Vieng Thong (Muang Hiem) This route has some sharp turns and stunning views of the mountain scenery. Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park is the last remaining home of the Indochina Tiger in mainland Southeast Asia. Along the way are several small villages of ethnic minorities, far from the mainstream. We make a stop at an elementary school there. It would be an ideal opportunity to hand over any school supplies (pencils, notebooks, etc) that you may have brought with you. Remember to possibly pack something.
After checking into our guesthouse we will start again. We want to go to the hot springs, which the locals like to use for bathing. Then we want to do it after them . Do not forget your bathing suit !

3rd overnight stay: Vieng Thong

Tuesday, November 21, 2023: Vieng Thong – Nam Nern – Muang Kham (150Km)

After breakfast we continue on Road No1 towards the village of Nam Nern. Here we turn onto a beautiful winding and very mountainous road that leads us finally downhill directly to our destination, Muang Kham. On the way we make an interesting stop in Tham Piew. Here are the so-called “Piew Caves”, where people hid during the Indochina War.

4th night: Muang Kham

Wednesday, November 22, 2023: Muang Kham – Phonsavanh (50Km)

Today there is only a short track on the to-do list. But we will visit some super interesting and beautiful places. The “Plains of Jars” and a “Mine Advisory Group”. There are still a lot of mines in this area. Don’t worry, we won’t hit any for sure. But some areas are still not accessible and have been cleared of mines for many years. Of course we should try to do some more kilometers in the surrounding area the rest of the time, 50 is not enough.
Stupidly, however, the accommodation is sooo beautiful that will also attract some attention

5. Overnight stay: Phonsavanh

Thursday, November 23, 2023: Phonsavanh – Paksan (230 Km)

Today we continue our journey over the mountains. We have to leave early because we have 230 km of road ahead of us today. The next overnight stay will be a camping. Don’t worry, the tents should already be set up when we arrive. Gezeltet will be at a small lake with a fantastic view, let you surprise

6th overnight stay: Paksan

Friday, November 24, 2023: Paksan – Vientiane (190 Km)

7. overnight stay: Vientiane

Saturday, November 25, 2023: Vientiane (Laos) – Phnom Penh (Kambodscha)

8. overnight stay: Pursat Cambodia

Sunday, November 26, 2023: Pursat/Kandieng Emergency aid projects

It’s time to get started, we want to get personally involved, our active part as development workers begins. The day will be exhausting and demands stamina and commitment. Today, each of us has an emergency aid project on the agenda. You have chosen this project yourself in the run-up to the tour. We will form small groups, each of which will travel with a development worker to the people/families concerned. There you will slip into the role of Nadine & Roland. Of course we help, not to mention the simultaneous translators.

In the evening there is a lot to talk about. According to our experience, the projects go emotionally deep and are a valuable experience for your own life. You will help the affected person/family in a way they never even dared to dream of. It will change you – positively.

9. overnight stay: Pursat

Monday, November 27, 2023: Pursat/Kandieng emergency projects and school project

This morning we will continue to work on the emergency projects. If necessary we will go shopping with the families or take them to the doctor. Whatever else needs to be done, we will do today. In the afternoon we will go to our Kandieng Sustainable School, about 20 beautiful kilometers away. We want to start a soccer tournament with the students, bring them 15 new laptops and do a dance or yoga class with them. Our fundrider Katharina Krabbe has something like that in mind. In the evening we will go to the Skybar or just to the pool and then to bed. Everyone, as he would like.

10. overnight stay: Pursat

Tuesday, November 28, 2023: Ride from Pursat – Banan (180 Km)

We finally saddle up again, today we are going on a beautiful country road tour from Pursat to Veal Veng. There we will have our lunch break and we will show you what a WASH conversion of a health center actually means. After all, we are driving for this really partly life-saving project. The area around Veal Veng is beautiful and so is the track in the afternoon. Here on the dusty track a good visor is needed.

When we arrive at the guesthouse in Banan, we are in any case ready for the pool and an extended BBQ with lots of beer. Bong & David are already waiting for us!!!

11. overnight stay: Banan

Wednesday, November 29, 2023: Emergency projects and wheelchair handovers.

Banan, our center in Cambodia. Here Mr.Bong and David are waiting for us. They represent Bareebo, our oldest partner. As we know them, they have organized the emergency aid projects and the wheelchair handovers down to the last detail. It will be an exciting and exhausting day, but that is the work of a development worker. Hopefully we will drive a lot of miles!

I am sure we will have a lot to tell each other in the evening. The guesthouse is very special and is located about 100 meters from Banan temple mountain.

12. overnight stay: Banan

Thursday, November 30, 2023: emergency projects and wheelchair handovers.

Today is the last day of social project work. Also today will be exhausting and indescribably interesting for everyone. If we have time, we will also visit the nearby cave temple. This is a cave you have to know. Not a single tourist gets lost here. We will also show you our village Chi Hong II, which we built many years ago. Again a mega day, we promise.

13th overnight stay: Banan

Friday, December 1, 2023: Banan – Battambang – Siem Reap (by boat!)

We hand in the scooters, what a pity . But today a real highlight is waiting for us. We have chartered a boat, especially for us. It takes us from Battambang to Siem Reap in 6 hours. It meanders on the narrow Sankar River about 4.5h through a breathtaking landscape. Then it goes on the huge Tonle Sap and the last 45 minutes we drive through a narrow lane, millimeter by millimeter through an endless tangle of mangroves. Fantastic. Arriving in Siem Reap we are picked up and taken to our last hotel. If you want to have a look at the temples of Ankor Watt, don’t party too long today, it starts at 4 o’clock tomorrow morning

14th overnight stay: Siem Reap

Saturday, December 2, 2023: individual departure
